Indexes shrugged off an early loss and rose in afternoon trading Wednesday. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 106.98 points, or 0.8 percent, at 12,985.11. It had been down as much as 112 points in early trading.
The Standard and Poor's 500 was up 10.99 points at 1,409.93. The Nasdaq composite rose 23.99 points to at 2,991.78.
Huge tax increases and spending cuts will come into effect Jan. 1 if no deal on the U.S. budget is reached. Economists say the measures could push the country back into recession. President Barack Obama said he believed both parties can reach a "framework" on a debt-cutting deal before Christmas, while House Speaker John Boehner told reporters that he was optimistic a deal could be reached, according news outlets including CNBC.
Craig Johnson, a Minneapolis, Minnesota-based technical market strategist at Piper Jaffray, said lawmakers realize that there is too much at stake to allow the deadline to pass.
"I don't think that anybody in Washington is going to do something so draconian, or so negative, that we're going to trigger a recession," Johnson said. "There will be some compromise."
Concern that the U.S. will go over the fiscal "cliff" has weighed on?stocks?since the Nov. 6 elections returned a divided government to power, with President Barack Obama staying in the White House and Republicans retaining control of the House.
Uncertainty about a possible increase in capital gains taxes has been prompting investors to sell?stocks, said Johnson.
As the third-quarter corporate earnings period draws to a close, investors and traders have become increasingly fixated on the negotiations to cut the budget deficit. Before Wednesday's gain, the market slumped Tuesday after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he was frustrated by the lack of progress in talks. The two moves canceled each other out, leaving both the Dow and the S&P 500 little changed for the week.
"We're all on pins and needles waiting for every bit of news, or rumors, coming out of Washington," said Ryan Detrick, a Cincinnati, Ohio-based technical analyst at Schaeffer's Investment Research. "That's what Wall Street is focused on. Everybody is watching the fiscal cliff."
Many companies are making special end-of-year dividend payments or moving up their quarterly payouts because investors will have to pay higher taxes on dividend income starting in 2013, unless lawmakers reach a compromise on taxes and government spending.
Costco, the wholesale club operator, surged $6.07 to $102.58 after the company said it would pay a special dividend of $7 a share next month, in addition to its regular quarterly dividend. Las Vegas Sands Corp. rose 5.3 percent Tuesday after the casino operator said it would distribute about $2.26 billion to shareholders before the end of the year. It rose another 1.3 percent Wednesday, gaining 60 cents to $49.96.
With the market's attention focused on the outcome of the "cliff" negotiations, some investors caution that the weakness in third-quarter corporate earnings bode poorly for the?stock?market.
"Think of corporate earnings as the canary in the coal mine," said Douglas Cote, chief market strategist at ING U.S. Investment Management. "Corporations are the first ones to signal that there is something going on with economic growth around the world."
Company earnings fell 0.9 percent in the third quarter, data provider FactSet said in a report Nov. 23. If they earning finish the period lower, it would mark the first decline in three years.
In economic news, U.S. sales of new homes dipped 0.3 percent in October, though they're up 20.4 percent for the year, according to a government report. Stable home prices suggest the housing market is steadily recovering.
A pickup in consumer spending and steady home sales helped lift economic growth in October and early November in most parts of the United States, the Federal Reserve said in its Beige Book survey released Wednesday. The one exception was the Northeast, which was slowed by Superstorm Sandy.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.63 percent from 1.64 percent.
Among?stocks?making big moves:
? Green Mountain Coffee Roasters surged $7.91, or 27.3 percent, to $36.86 after the beleaguered coffee company reported strong fourth-quarter results and issued earnings and revenue forecasts that far exceeded the market's expectations.
?Fresh Market Inc. plunged $7.46, or 12 percent, to $52.78, after the company's fiscal third-quarter profit fell short of analysts' expectations.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? The RV industry's recovery from the Great Recession has picked up speed.
Recreational Vehicle makers are churning out higher numbers of travel trailers bound for dealers' lots and, ultimately, campgrounds.
Overall shipments from manufacturers to dealers ? a key measure of consumer demand ? are expected to rise 10 percent in 2012 and could gain another 4.5 percent next year, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association said Tuesday.
Through September, shipments were up nearly 11 percent from the same period last year, the group said. The higher-than-expected number had dealers, manufacturers and suppliers feeling more optimistic as they gathered this week for an annual industry trade show.
"We made up a lot of ground this year," said Jeffrey Pastore, owner of Hartville RV Center in northeastern Ohio. "We're seeing a lot more buyers walking in the door, and we're seeing those buyers with more money in hand."
Sales at his dealership are up about 18 percent so far this year, and he's predicting another 15 percent gain in 2013. It's a big turnaround from 2009, when sales plunged 40 percent amid the country's worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.
"It was dreadful," said Tom Stinnett, an RV dealer in southern Indiana. "There were a lot of us wondering if we were going to make it."
Shipments to dealers slumped to 165,700 units in 2009 from 353,400 in 2007. Weak demand and evaporated credit left dealer lots clogged with RVs and forced the industry to lay off tens of thousands of workers. This year's shipments are expected to be better ? hitting 277,300.
Jobs are coming back, too. The industry's workforce has risen to 375,000 from less than 250,000 in 2008, according to RVIA. It's still below the 530,000 from 2007.
Driving the industry's gradual comeback have been less-expensive towable RVs attached to pickups or hitched to other vehicles.
Towables, which now account for about 90 percent of the new RV market, cost between $8,000 and $100,000, with an average price of $32,000, according to RVIA. Before the recession hit, towables represented eight out of every 10 new RVs shipped.
By contrast, stand-alone motor homes range in price from $55,000 to $1.5 million for top-of-the-line, bus-like vehicles. The average price is $100,000 for the amenity-filled moving homes.
"It's a given that consumers love to do this, or there would be no market at all because they don't have to have it," Stinnett said. "But they're simply not willing to commit as much money."
KZ RV, based in Shipshewana, Ind., has regained about three-fourths of its pre-recessionary business, but the manufacturer has seen the shift in consumer demand toward towables. Its most popular products cost between $10,000 and $35,000 ? well off its top-of-the-line RVs, which run about $90,000, said Andy Baer, the company's vice president of sales.
"Seven years ago they didn't give a thought to buying a top-of-the-line product, kind of similar to the housing industry," Baer said. "People are more in tuned with what the reality is that they can comfortably afford today."
Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Thetford Corp., which supplies toilets and sinks to RV makers, saw its business plunge by 70 percent during the recession. It survived the downturn because RV owners upgraded existing models, said Executive Vice President Kevin Phillips. Now, the company is having a good year as existing RV owners purchase upgrades and entry-level buyers enter the market, he said.
Winnebago Industries Inc., best known for its premium products, also has adjusted to the new market.
The company, headquartered in Forest City, Iowa, is rolling out towable products again after a decades-long absence from that market.
And Winnebago has stepped up its presence in the market for entry-level motor homes priced in the $60,000 to $70,000 range. Those vehicles offer fewer features and amenities than their pricier counterparts.
"That's where we see a lot of the movement in the industry," said Scott Degnan, the company's vice president of sales.
Winnebago's profits soared in its last fiscal year, which ended Aug. 25. Winnebago earned $45 million over those 12 months, up from $11.8 million in the prior year. Revenue rose 17 percent to $581.7 million.

BERLIN (Reuters) - German parliamentarians questioned Deutsche Bank's
The London interbank offered rate (Libor), which is used to price billions of dollars worth of financial contracts, was put under the spotlight in June when UK and U.S. authorities fined British bank Barclays
Deutsche Bank is cooperating with investigations in the United States and Europe over the setting of rates between 2005 and 2011. It said in July an internal probe found that no members of the management board behaved inappropriately.
But the bank said two of its former traders may have been involved in colluding to manipulate global interest rates.
The German lawmakers are widely expected to press Leithner and Baenziger on details of the individuals involved, including how senior they were, and what sort of payoff they received.
They had hoped to question Deutsche's co-Chief Executive Anshu Jain, a former head of investment banking, but the bank decided to send board member Leithner in his place, sparking criticism from Jain's former boss, Josef Ackermann. The hearing was due to start about 6:30 EDT.
The probe will likely strain the already tense relationship between bankers, who prefer to keep out of the public eye, and politicians, who are eager to demonstrate their grip on the risk-hungry world of global finance.
BUBA AGAINST INTEREFERENCE
Germany's Bundesbank has urged Berlin's lawmakers not to interfere in efforts to overhaul a system for setting global benchmark interest rates, a filing to the parliamentary hearing in Berlin showed.
In a letter addressed to Birgit Reinemund, the Free Democrat (FDP) head of the lower house's Finance Committee, Bundesbank board member Andreas Dombret said the choice of which benchmark rate to use should remain a matter for markets to decide.
"Any change to a different reference interest rate should be a matter of free choice for markets and not imposed through lawmakers," the letter said.
Libor remains in use as a reference for pricing billions of dollars worth of debt across the globe. Because Libor remains so entrenched in financial markets, regulators are working on ways to reform, rather than replace Libor.
Libor rates submitted by banks are compiled by Thomson Reuters
Regulators fear that Libor remains vulnerable to manipulation as banks are asked to submit only a hypothetical estimate about their expected borrowing rate, rather than disclosing the actual prices of completed transactions.
Because Libor is so widely used, coming up with alternative benchmark interest rates can only be a medium to long-term goal, Buba's Dombret said.
He also said in his filing to the committee that benchmark rates should take greater account of actual transactions, rather relying only on estimates.

Splashed all over the media, a new report says you can cross ?get an annual checkup? off your to-do list. Scientists in Denmark announced that yearly doctor visits didn?t help 182,880 people live longer or sidestep medical problems. Well, just showing up once a year isn?t what makes those annual visits so valuable; it?s actually getting good advice, making a plan to stay healthy and following it. That makes you live younger, longer and happier! So, our advice? Keep those appointments, then use the getting-you-healthier plan that you and your doc devise ? PLUS the tips in this column ? to kick-start a healthy-living revolution guaranteed to make you feel better and roll back your RealAge.
You can transform that all-too-often rushed and confusing doctor?s appointment (you?re lucky to get 18 minutes ? demand more) and make sure you?re not one of the 50 percent of patients who walk out not knowing what to do next.
Step one:? Partner with your doc. We love it when you become the world?s leading expert on you, your body and your health. (Go to ShareCare.com or Realage.com and search for ?How can I have a better doctor checkup?? Then click on our videos.) Knowing as much as possible about any health conditions you have ? and about treatment options ? can boost your well-being, save money and help you sidestep drugs and procedures you don?t need.
Step two: Come prepared. Bring along a list of the drugs, supplements and remedies you take, extra medical info (like X-rays or reports from another doctor), all your health insurance information and a note pad and pencil (maybe a tape recorder and/or a friend or relative) to record what happens. And write down in advance any special questions you want answered.
Step three: Have these basic questions handy. Make sure you know the answers to these when you leave, and others you may have:
?Are you concerned about any aspect of my health?
?Do you have any recommendations about what I can do on my own (like exercising or diet changes) to improve my health?
?Should I lose or gain weight?
?Are there tests I need based on my age or for other reasons?
?When should I come back for a follow-up appointment?
Step four: Set health goals with your doctor. Lose 15 pounds? Lower blood pressure or LDL cholesterol by 20 points? Set a real target, with a ?done by? date. If the goal?s a big one, break it down into mini or daily steps.
Step five: Call in reinforcements. Your doc may not have an hour to run through the basics of diabetes care or how to upgrade your eating habits, but he or she can direct you to those who do. Ask about support groups and find out what your insurance covers (visits with a registered dietitian, diabetes educator, cardiac rehab with an exercise physiologist or therapist, or even people who can make reminder calls to help you stay on track). There?s plenty of proof that the team approach really works.
Step six: Find a community of support. Online at sharecare.com you can find tips for reaching out to dozens of support groups. Local hospitals will also have info.
Step seven: Find out what to do at home. Would a home blood pressure monitor, a new blood-sugar meter or a smartphone app that tracks your fruits and vegetables help you reach your goals?
Step eight: Schedule a follow-up visit.? You and your health partner (aka your doctor) can make midcourse corrections to your plan so you can meet your goal: Six visits in a row in which you achieve normal blood pressure, the best weight for your height, healthy LDL cholesterol and fasting blood sugar levels, have all immunizations up-to-date, and no tobacco use. Your yearly checkup isn?t just to get a blessing (no cancer, whew), it is to set targets and then ensure you have enough support to hit them.

We may still be a couple of months away from its long-awaited release, but RIM's first BlackBerry 10 smartphone certainly doesn't seem to be shy of the cameras in the interim. Just last week, some photos turned up on the CrackBerry forums that offered a clear look at the new L Series model next to a BlackBerry Bold, and now another batch of images have made a brief appearance on Twitter before being promptly removed. Those latest, first spotted by TechSuplex, are unfortunately of the BlurryCam variety, but they do show the phone from a variety of angles, and the device in question was said to boot up in a snappy eight seconds. As CrackBerry notes, they also appear to be relatively recent, with the device sporting the new style icons that were just revealed this month. Hit the links below for a closer look.

Fitness
Practicing yoga regularly will not only bring you physical fitness but all bring you mental and spiritual strength. Yoga brings you a holistic fitness package, it helps you work on your posture, it provides you great breathing techniques and also helps you maintain peace through meditation.
Weight loss
Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutations) and Kapal Bhati pranayama (a breathing technique) help you lose weight through yoga. Another benefit is that, regular practice of yoga makes your body more sensitive to the food you consume, which automatically helps you keep a check on weight.
Stress Relief
Just a few minutes of yoga in the day can help you get rid of all the stress that you mind and body have accumulated through the day. The various postures, breathing techniques and meditation help you release stress in a very effective way.
Inner peace
We seek avenues for inner peace outside, however, little do we know that inner peace does not lie around beautiful scenic mountains or near a gushing river side, it lies within, you just have to look for it. A few minutes of meditation and yoga can help you find inner peace.
Improved Immunity
Our body and mind are connected, and ant disturbance in the mind can affect the body and vice versa. The various postures in Yoga, help massage organs in your body and strengthen your muscles. Breathing and meditation during Yoga help build a stronger mind, release stress and also help build immunity.
Increased Energy
As we grow older, are energy levels start shrinking. We lead extremely stressful lives today, and running from pillar to post to get things organized can indeed drain us of energy. Just a few minutes of yoga can help us rejuvenate our mind and body.
Flexibility and Posture
When you practice yoga regularly you will see that it helps stretch and tone your body muscles and will make them strong. The various asanas also help improve your posture when you sit, stand or walk. Yoga helps relive your body of the pain that develops when you assume incorrect postures on a daily basis.
With yoga your body becomes sensitive to what you crave for to eat. Speak with a Registered Holistic Nutritionist in your neighborhood and they will guide you on how you can enrich your diet with foods that will help you make the most of your Yoga adventure. Homeopathy too has a host of energy boosting solutions that will make your Yoga experience more fruitful.

How much can you realistically afford to gift without jeopardizing your own financial security? The question is complex and the right answer might be the wrong answer!
As you may know, current law allows you gift a large sum of $5 million (more than $10 million for married couples) without triggering any gift taxes. Since the law is set to expire at the end of 2012, many are left guessing as to what will happen next year and gearing up for a very ?gifted? 4th Quarter. But as you make plans to take advantage of the gift tax savings, have you carefully considered your own financial needs and goals?
From a tax planning standpoint, there may never be a better time for you to make a large gift. But, you know that life is about more than tax planning. The real question you need to answer, if you are inclined to make substantial gifts, is whether ? and how much ? you can afford to give. Wealth Strategies Journal recently published an article, ?How Much Can You Gift,? to help you through the decision process.
Some things to consider:
Consult the cited article for more gifting considerations. For example, you should not gift away ? in any form ? assets that are essential for your own financial needs. You can gift away assets to your children (or trusts for them) that you will never need. And don?t forget about estate planning tools that can help you make gifts that you may need, with ?just in case? access if you do. Seek appropriate legal counsel for more information.

It's estimated that U.S. shoppers hit stores and websites at record numbers over the Thanksgiving weekend, according to a survey released by the National Retail Federation on Sunday, setting a Black Friday record. They were attracted by retailers' efforts to make shopping easier, including opening stores on Thanksgiving evening, updating mobile shopping applications for smartphones and tablets, and expanding shipping and layaway options.
All told, a record 247 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the four-day weekend starting on Thanksgiving, up 9.2 percent of last year, according to a survey of 4,000 shoppers that was conducted by research firm BIGinsight for the trade group. Americans spent more too: The average holiday shopper spent $423 over the entire weekend, up from $398 last year. Total spending over the four-day weekend totaled $59.1 billion, up 12.8 percent from 2011.
Caitlyn Maguire, 21, was one of the shoppers that took advantage of all the new conveniences of shopping this year. Maguire, who lives in New York, began buying on Thanksgiving night at Target's East Harlem store. During the two-hour wait in line, she also bought items on her iPhone on Amazon.com. On?Friday, she picked up a few toys at Toys R Us. And on Saturday she was out at the stores again.
"I'm basically done," said Maguire, who spent about $400 over the weekend.
The results for the weekend appear to show that retailers' efforts to make shopping effortless for U.S. consumers during the holiday shopping season worked. Retailers upped the ante in order to give Americans more reasons to shop. Stores feared that consumers might not spend because of the weak job market and worries that tax increases and budget cuts will take effect if Congress fails to reach a budget deal by January.
Retailers, which can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue in November and December, were hoping Thanksgiving openings and other incentives would help boost what's expected to be a difficult holiday shopping season. The National Retail Federation estimates that overall sales in November and December will rise 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion. That's more than a percentage point lower than the growth in each of the past two years, and the smallest increase since 2009, when sales were nearly flat.
Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation, said retailers can be encouraged by the first weekend of the holiday shopping season.
"Retailers and consumers both won this weekend, especially on Thanksgiving," he said.
Here were the trends that emerged over the weekend:
? Online wave: According to comScore, which tracks online spending, online sales rose 26 percent to $1.04 billion on?Black?Friday?compared with a year ago. On Thanksgiving, online sales rose 32 percent from last year to $633 million. And online sales onBlack?Friday?were up 26 percent from the same day last year to $1.042 billion. It was the first time online sales on?Black?Friday?surpassed $1 billion.
? Thanksgiving shopping: Many stores, including Toys R Us and Target, opened on Thanksgiving evening this year. No data is out yet about how much shoppers spent on that day, but it appears that consumers took advantage of the earlier start: According to the National Retail Federation's survey, the number of people who shopped on Thanksgiving rose 23.1 percent. That compares with a 3.1 percent increase forBlack?Friday.
Linda and James Michaels of Portland, Ore., were among those shopping on Thanksgiving. They hit up the big sales on the day and got everything they were hoping for that night.
They picked up remote control cars and some Mickey Mouse items on sale at Toys R Us. Then they went a few doors down to Target and scored the last Operation game on sale for $7. They were even able to pick up some pajamas and shoes along the way for the kids. In total they spent about $300.
"I felt lucky that I caught the deals and there was no craziness, no fighting," said Linda Michaels. "I was nervous."
ShopperTrak, which analyzes customer traffic at 40,000 U.S. stores, plans to release sales data for Thanksgiving later this week, but the firm is estimating that retailers generated $700 million in sales on the holiday.
??Black?Friday?flop: It appears that the Thanksgiving openings may have hurt sales on the day after.
Black?Friday?is still expected to be the biggest shopping day of the year, but sales on that day slipped to $11.2 billion, down 1.8 percent from last year, according to ShopperTrak. That's below ShopperTrak's estimate that?Black?Friday?sales would rise 3.8 percent to $11.4 billion.
Karen MacDonald, a spokeswoman at Taubman Centers, which operates 28 malls across the country, said that Thanksgiving openings hurt business. Based on a sampling of 10 malls, sales growth was unchanged up to mid-single digits on?Friday, and unchanged up to low single digit on Saturday.
"It was a different feeling," she said. "It was a good?Black?Friday, but I don't think it was great."
The disappointing sales on?Black?Friday?may have been the result of shoppers like Miguel Garcia, a 40-year-old office coordinator.
"I can't deal with all that craziness," said Garcia, who was at a Target in the Bronx borough of New York City on Saturday. "Compared to what I saw on TV yesterday, this is so much more comfortable and relaxed. I can actually think straight and compare prices."

Most of us will go to a lot of trouble to get a deal, but we're too embarrassed to ask for one. Here are five simple tricks to help you haggle for the best deal ? and how to know when to walk away.?

But instead of just?looking?for a better deal, why not ask for one? We?ve mentioned it before in posts like "The Simplest Way to Save on Everything." But in case you missed it, here are the basics.
According to a recent?CouponCabin survey?of 2,319 shoppers, 23 percent of respondents said they?re too embarrassed to haggle and 10 percent refuse to haggle because they don?t want to appear cheap.
The key to successful haggling is focusing on the fact that it?s your money. There?s no need to be embarrassed, there?s no need to fear appearing cheap. Prepare yourself by having a firm idea of the item?s price. Then decide what you?re willing to spend, and go for it!
If you walk into a department store and ask an associate for a better price, they?ll typically say they don?t have the authority to make those decisions. They?re probably right ? ask for someone who does. If you can?t find a manager or other store employee with the ability or willingness to negotiate, the store may be too big. Head to a local shop or boutique, where you can often talk directly to the owner. Which brings us to our next tip?
You?ll have a better shot at a deal if you shop at an independent retailer or second-hand store.?Small Business Saturday, which American Express introduced in 2010 to encourage shoppers to support their local community businesses, occurs on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. While haggling might be possible on Black Friday, you?ll find more luck negotiating when hitting the local shops on Small Business Saturday ? or year-round.
Haggle on weekdays and afternoons when stores are less crowded and sales associates and managers have more free time.?It?s also better to ask for a bargain at the end of the month or shopping season, when shop owners are closing their books or clearing shelves for new merchandise.
Negotiating is a subtle human art that?s been around as long as people have. Like any art, there are different approaches. But there are a few that have proven consistently better than others. For example, appear in love with the product and the person on other side of a negotiation knows you?ll pay full price. Be rude, and people won?t want to talk to you at all, much less negotiate. Act like you?re only kidding, and the merchant will assume you are.
Want the best deal? Act uninterested and be willing to walk away. Be nice, but firm. Look your opponent directly, and tell them with complete confidence what you expect. You might be surprised at the result!
