Ringo Starr's birthplace in Liverpool has been saved from the threat of demolition, the Telegraph reports. The house, a run-down three-bedroom Victorian terrace, was one of 400 buildings marked for demolition in the Dingle area of Liverpool, but Beatles fans and city residents have successfully lobbied to save the house, along with 15 others in the area. The Liverpool City Council has agreed to give locals the opportunity to fix up the properties.

The Liverpool City Council initially resisted efforts to preserve the house because Starr only lived at the location with his family for three months as an infant.

The National Trust of England decreed that the house did not merit saving because of his brief stay there at a very early age, and that they simply did not have the means to acquire more than a dozen houses where the Beatles lived as children.

Former Fleetwood Mac guitarist dies

Bob Welch, an early member of rock band Fleetwood Mac who enjoyed a successful solo career with hits such as "Ebony Eyes," died on Thursday of an apparent suicide at home in Nashville. He was 66.

Police said Welch's body was found by his wife with a single gunshot wound to the chest, and he had left a suicide note. Welch suffered from health problems, but police did not disclose what those issues were.?

"The police are investigating it as a suicide, and there was no evidence of foul play," Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron told Reuters.?

Welch was born on Aug. 31, 1945, in Los Angeles to movie producer father Robert L. Welch and actress mother Templeton Fox. He moved to Paris to study French at the Sorbonne, then returned to Los Angeles in the early 1970s.?

He was invited to join Fleetwood Mac after the departure of founding members Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer. He played guitar and was a vocalist with the band from 1971 to 1974, working on five of their early albums including 1971's "Future Games," 1972's "Bare Trees" and 1973's "Mystery to Me."?

It was after Welch's departure from the band in 1975 that Fleetwood Mac went on to find its largest measure of fame on albums such as 1977's "Rumours" with the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to the band's lineup.?

Nicks released a statement, calling Welch's death "devastating."?

"He was an amazing guitar player ? he was funny, sweet ??and he was smart ??I'm so very sorry for his family and for the family of Fleetwood Mac ??so, so sad," Nicks said.?

Welch fell out with his former band mates after suing the group in 1994 for unpaid royalties, which led to his exclusion from the group's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1998.?

The singer and guitarist formed a hard rock group called Paris in 1975, releasing two albums, "Paris" and "Hunt Sales," before disbanding the group a few years later and embarking on a solo career.?

His debut solo record, the pop-driven "French Kiss" in 1977, went platinum and produced the hits "Sentimental Lady," "Ebony Eyes" and "Hot Love, Cold World." Welch followed up with 1979's "Three Hearts," and four more albums throughout the early 1980s, none of which emulated the same success as "French Kiss."?

He moved to Phoenix, Ariz., in 1987 and formed a short-lived group called Avenue M, before moving to Nashville in the late 1990s, working on a songwriting career and releasing a tribute to bebop music, "Bob Welch Looks At Bop," in 1999.?

His most recent albums, 2003's "His Fleetwood Mac Years and Beyond" and 2006's "His Fleetwood Mac Years and Beyond 2," had previously unreleased material as well as new compositions.

Welch is the second member of Fleetwood Mac to die this year. In January, another former guitarist for the band, Bob Weston, died in London from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage, at age 64.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The prototype space shuttle that arrived in New York City by air earlier this spring is on the move again, this time by sea.

The Enterprise had been parked at Kennedy Airport since it flew from Washington to New York atop a 747 jet.

The shuttle was placed on a barge Saturday and readied for a slow journey through the harbor to its permanent home at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on Manhattan's West Side.

The barge was being taken across New York Harbor to Port Elizabeth, N.J. on Sunday.

Then, on Tuesday, a tugboat is to move the Enterprise to the Intrepid, a decommissioned aircraft carrier.

Plans are in place for a floating crane to lift the spacecraft onto the flight deck.

AIG settles workers compensation insurance complaint with all 50 ...

Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty today announced that asettlement agreement?between the American International Group, Inc. (AIG) and its affiliates with all 50 states and the District of Columbia has become fully effective.?The settlement?is a result of AIG misreporting $2.12 billion of workers? compensation premium as other lines of insurance. As part of the settlement agreement, AIG agreed to pay a national penalty of $100 million, and $46.5 million in additional premium taxes and assessments.

The Office of Insurance Regulation (Office) will receive $5.6 million in fines and penalties with an additional $8.7 million split between the Department of Financial Services (DFS) Division of Workers? Compensation, Department of Revenue (DOR) and the Florida Workers? Compensation Insurance Guaranty Association (FWCIGA).

"AIG systematically underreported workers' compensation insurance premium by putting this premium into the general liability or commercial automobile liability categories,? stated Commissioner McCarty. "The practical effect of this misreporting was to report premium in lines of business with lower residual market obligations or premium tax rates and assessments. I am pleased by the collaborative multi-state investigative effort that will yield millions of dollars in unpaid taxes owed to the states."

The lead states issued their multi-state examination report in December 2010 and entered into a related regulatory settlement agreement. The agreement was subject to several conditions, all of which have now been resolved. One of those was a $450 million residual market settlement that was approved by the U.S. District Court in February 2012. The remaining open condition, a settlement with insurance guaranty associations, was satisfied on May 30, 2012 when a $25 million settlement agreement was signed.

Florida was one of the lead states in this multistate examination along with Delaware, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. As part of the agreement, AIG entered into a compliance plan concerning the financial reporting of its workers? compensation premium, and going forward agreed to be monitored and subject to a follow-up examination by the lead states in two years.

What SOPA and PIPA Could Mean for Facebook ? Internet ? Forums ...

Facebook is an absolute phenomenon in the cyberspace community, but the proposed legislation that Congress has decided to table for now could have far-reaching impact on the world?s top social media outlet. The citizen journalism that is associated with Facebook accounts has done much to awaken those who are asleep politically. It is also a haven for what many content producers call online piracy, suggesting that the technology used within the framework of Facebook, and actually all other websites with user-generated content, is actually facilitating a breach of copyright laws.

Posting links to articles, music, and videos is a standard sharing practice on Facebook. The new legislation would make websites like Facebook responsible for the content that is generated by its users, effectively making Facebook and others like it the first-line policing agency for the activity. This law would make Facebook criminally complicit in all site activity, along with being civilly liable. The criminal fact could imply that the civil tort claim is valid even before a trial in which the intellectual property owner must prove ownership and prove a violation occurred.

The civil liability is probably the ultimate goal of this law, as the intellectual property owners do not only want the publication platforms to police the practice. The owners, which are mostly the large media conglomerates, want the authority to tell the government, without proof, that any suspected publication website should be removed or blocked from cyberspace. The service provider that is blocking can also be part of the group that is pinpointing censorship.

This would put Facebook front-and-center on the ?blacklist? of ?violators? and reduce the website to a collection of insignificant posts and pictures. What it effectively does in addition to possibly curtailing some online piracy is prevent individuals from sharing news articles and text publications, also. The impact it would have on political communication is incalculable. For example, the Occupy Wall Street movement was largely orchestrated on Facebook.

When this legislation is implemented in conjunction with the various sections of the National Defense Authorization Act it becomes a far over-reaching government policy that eliminates due process on two prongs. The legislative precedent of the NDAA allowing indefinite detainment for American citizens is problematic enough, but the governmental interference in the practice of file-sharing could easily be stretched beyond actual embedded copyrighted material to include all hyperlinks. This could also include individuals that are organizing politically based on current events.

What this all means for Facebook currently is an unstable economic environment. Goldman Sachs bought a huge amount of stock at Facebook?s initial public offering, along with ?loaning? $450 million last summer. They now own enough stock to impact company policy. When all of the governmental and corporate activity is connected, it appears that Goldman Sachs expected this legislation to be rammed through Congress. They are a major stock holder in many of the companies that are pushing for SOPA and PIPA. And the end result could be an eventual complete shutdown for Facebook.

Avreich Assaulted on a Bus from Ashdod to Bnei Brak

A chareidi passenger on board a bus traveling from Ashdod to Bnei Brak was assaulted on Tuesday night. He was traveling on a number 350 Egged bus when an African male attacked him and fled.

The man explains that he has a cast on his leg and as a result he was compelled to rest his leg on the empty seat next to his. ?The Sudanese man got on and insisted on sitting in the seat aside me. I asked him to please sit in one of the many other empty seats? the daily HaMevaser quotes the avreich as saying.

The man insisted on that seat and pushed the man?s leg aside and sat down, pushing against him. ?I explained to him that he was hurting me and he began the assault. He then appeared to have noticed I was phoning police and got up and shouted to the driver ?I want to get off? but the driver did not comply, explaining he was between stops?.

Eventually, the man managed to pry the doors open when the bus stopped at Yarkon Street. Police and Shomrim volunteers arrived a short time later and they apprehended the suspect in the Dan Company parking lot.

Leeches and lances might seem like prescriptions from the past. But bloodletting might be back in vogue. A small study shows that losing a little blood might improve cardiovascular health for obese people who also have what?s called metabolic syndrome.

The study tracked 33 patients with metabolic syndrome?defined by the presence of some of an assortment of conditions, such as high cholesterol, hypertension and insulin resistance. Researchers took 300 milliliters of blood from the patients, a little less than the one pint standard donation, with a repeat treatment a month later.

After six weeks, treated adults had lower blood pressure than the control group. Glucose levels also decreased, which suggests limited blood removal might improve metabolic health. The findings are in the journal BMC Medicine. [Khosrow Houschyar et al., "Effects of phlebotomy-induced reduction of body iron stores on metabolic syndrome: results from a randomized clinical trial"]

The researchers think that the blood loss reduces iron levels. And excess iron in the blood has been tied to many metabolic syndrome ailments.

The FDA has okayed leeches for some procedures. Which could lead patients to thank their doctors for a treatment that sucks.
