New findings on astronaut vision loss

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? Could vision changes experienced by astronauts be linked to a vitamin B-12 or folate deficiency? While investigating the vision changes recently identified in astronauts, nutritional assessment data showed similarities to symptoms that occur with vitamin deficiencies, according to a new study published in the March edition of The Journal of Nutrition.

Approximately 20 percent of astronauts living on the International Space Station have reported post-flight vision changes. Previous research, published in the October 2011 issue of Ophthalmology, identified a possible link between the reported vision changes and increased intracranial pressure caused by shifts in bodily fluids from the lower extremities to the upper part if the body, due to microgravity. This may still be part of the problem, but the new study shows there may be other contributing factors. The findings may provide evidence to help understand why some crew members suffer vision-related problems, while others do not.

The nutrition study included 20 astronauts, with 5 experiencing vision or eye anatomy changes. The investigation collected data from crew urine and blood samples taken before spaceflight, while living aboard the station, and after returning to Earth. The samples taken while living in orbit were kept in the station's Minus-Eighty Degree Freezer, or MELFI, and returned to the ground for analysis.

Comparing the blood analysis with nutritional assessments revealed that crew members experiencing vision changes had consistently lower folate levels and higher levels of metabolites. The comparison suggests the vision changes may be due in part to what's called a "dependent one-carbon metabolic pathway" change.

All About the 1C Pathway

Let's break this down: The human body is like a machine, with many chemical processes taking place to keep cells functioning, which in turn keep the body functioning. These chemical processes use specific pathways to do their job. Everyone has these pathways.

The one-carbon pathway is part of the chemical process the body uses to make DNA, or genetic instructions. The pathways are similar to an assembly line in a factory. If the pathway is not working properly, it gets behind or backs up. This is what happens if there is a vitamin deficiency. Since astronauts participate in dietary and nutritional assessments, researchers were able to rule out common vitamin and nutritional deficiencies.

Enzymes are the workers on the assembly line, and can have different forms -- little changes or variations that occur -- between individuals. These multiple forms are known as polymorphisms. As humans evolve, tiny changes in DNA occur resulting in multiple forms of enzymes. A good example of polymorphisms is blood types -- though blood is blood, there are differences that account for a variety of blood types. Lactose intolerance is another example of polymorphisms in the human body.

Vision Changes

With nutritional deficiencies ruled out, researchers began considering the possibility that polymorphisms, which may be part of the one-carbon pathway, could be causing the vision changes.

Since the folate and metabolite variances in the affected astronauts were seen preflight, there are several theories. These individuals may be more prone to microgravity-induced fluid shifts. They may be affected by small changes in the station's cabin carbon dioxide levels, which are slightly higher than those on Earth. Even small changes in the cabin air mix could increase intracranial pressure. On the other hand, other astronauts exposed to higher carbon dioxide levels did not have vision changes.

In Earth-based studies, the enzyme differences that slow down the pathway causing the backup have been linked to a greater occurrence of migraine headaches and strokes. These types of conditions can be related to increased intracranial pressure.

Results from this investigation also could provide advancements in understanding and treating retinal vascular and optic nerve disorders and diseases on Earth.

"While these results are very exciting, they are preliminary," said Scott Smith, a nutritionist and one of the authors of the recent study from NASA's Johnson Space Center's Nutritional Biochemistry Lab. "The next step is to directly test for the presence of enzyme polymorphisms to verify whether this relates to the vision changes."

"We clearly have identified a piece of the vision puzzle," Smith said. "We now need to go another step forward to assess whether it is a small piece among many others, or a large piece that is a primary cause of this problem. Not only may the results have significant implications for NASA and future astronauts, but the implications for the general population could be profound."

Additional research to expand understanding of how life in space affects astronaut vision is planned, and NASA recently selected eight investigations as part of a broader suite of astronaut health research.

Many years ago, people didn?t have televisions. Many read the papers to get the news or listened to the radio. Just as satellite television has entered American homes, another thing has also been developed that is called satellite radio.

What is satellite radio? This piece of hardware allows the individual to listen to favorite recording artists and shows instead of watching it on television. Given that the United States is a vast place and there are various stations in each state, this also allows the user to listen to one back home hundreds of miles away.

Currently, there are two main players competing head on in the market. The first is called Sirius while the other is XM radio. Which of the two is better? This question depends on whom the individual will ask but both are doing quite well and more customers are signing up.

Sirius is the first to ever provide commercial free programming on all its music channels and has a wide array of accessories for customers to buy. This is despite that fact that XM radio launched a few months in advance.

The subscription fee of Sirius a little pricey compared to XM radio. When people want the best things in life, money maybe an obstacle. So the deciding factor will be what the hardware has to offer.

Satellite radio has been around for almost 5 years. Since this is considered to be the ?in thing? in the market, both companies have tied up with the major car manufacturers to have this installed in their vehicles. This is the same thing Ipod is doing so the owner can listen to the favorite tunes while on the road.

Sirius has 65 channels that feature sports, news and other programs aside from music. This includes exclusive coverage of special events such as the NFL. XM radio on the other hand has NASCAR and Fox news. It has 68 channels which is 3 more than what the other is offering to the consumer.

The accessories used by Sirius satellite radio allows the person to listen to this at home or in the car. One of the basic accessories it uses is the Sanyo CRSR-10 Plug and Play system that will cost about $ 149.99. Those who are not satisfied can have this upgraded-which will cost from $ 250 to $ 2,000.

XM radio on the other hand uses the Delphi XM Roady Receiver. This will cost an individual somewhere between $ 30 to $ 400, but those who choose to get a monthly subscription will only have to pay $ 12.95 per month.

Both the models being offered by Sirius and XM radio are easy to install. The person will just have to pay a small fee as a service charge when enlisting the help of a customer representative when this is being done.

Customers can buy the unit in a store or order this online. It is not only ordinary individuals who are very interested in this product since there are also other models for commercial use that are being broadcasted in public access systems of hotels and other retail establishments

Is Sirius satellite radio better then that XM radio? Given that both companies have different things to offer, this really depends on the tastes of the customer.

(AP) ? Australia and South Africa will share hosting of a giant radio telescope made up of thousands of separate dishes and intended to help scientists figure out the make-up of the universe, the international consortium overseeing the project announced Friday.

South Africa led an African consortium that included Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia, and telescopes will be erected in all its partners. In South Africa, dishes will be added to a remote site in the arid Karoo desert where a smaller radio telescope project already is under way.

South Africa and Australia, which partnered with New Zealand in bidding for the project, had competed fiercely. South Africa claimed victory Friday, saying it got two of the projects three major components.

"We may feel slightly disappointed that we didn't get the whole thing. But I think one should emphasize that we did get most of it," said Justin Jonas, the chief South African scientist on the project. "Two-thirds of the biggest instrument in the world is still the biggest instrument in the world."

South Africa's science minister Naledi Pandor and scientists who had prepared the country's bid celebrated with an Africa-shaped cake at a news conference in South Africa's capital.

"This marks a real turning point in Africa, where we are becoming a destination for science and engineering, and not just a place where there are resources and tourism opportunities," Jonas added.

Australia also welcomed the split decision.

"It is an outstanding result for the Australia-New Zealand bid after many years of preparation and an intensive international process," said Sen. Chris Evans, Australia's science minister.

The Square Kilometer Array telescope will be 50 times more sensitive and scan the sky 10,000 times faster than any existing telescope. It requires huge open spaces with very few humans.

John Womersley, chair of the consortium's board, said the telescope will help scientists answer key questions: "Where do we come from? Where are we going? What is this universe we live in?"

"We don't understand what 96 percent of our universe is made of," he said.

The organization said dividing construction of the telescope will "maximize on investments already made by both Australia and South Africa."

Womersley said that splitting construction between the two nations will likely add around 10 percent to the ?350 million ($439 million) cost of the first phase of building the giant telescope. But he said there would be a payoff for astronomers.

"It delivers more science in phase one. The capabilities of this instrument are greater than the original design," Womersley said.

How important is Domain registration and hosting to your website? As I have looked into the creation of websites, both for myself or for a business, it has become crystal clear that one of the most important steps in the process is the domain registration and hosting. I was always taught to take things one step at a time, and without those first two steps in the process, your website will be marginal at best.

Good domain registration and hosting is going to cost you money, but it is worth it. When you go with a free Domains or hosting service, you do not end up with your own domain name. The idea is to have the address of your website in the format of yourname.com or yourcompanyname.com rather than one that is generic to a free Domain Registration and hosting service.

The first step in domain registration and hosting is to choose a domain name. Your domain name is that web address that you want. The registration should not cost more than five to ten dollars for a year. Just get on line and check out the various services to find the price you can afford to get the domain name you want, as long as it is available. Remember, the choice of what domain name to use for your website is one of the most important things you are going to do for it.

In the domain registration and hosting process, choose a domain name that is not only descriptive of your website, but also easy for people or customers to remember. Try to choose a domain name that is going to also be useable as a keyword so that it will show up higher in web searches. As an example, if your website is about squirrels, then you might check to see if squirrel.com is available or something along those lines. You may even try variations like squirrellover.com or something like that.

Once you have the domain name registered, the next step in the domain registration and hosting process is to find someone who can host your website. A hosting service will actually place your website on the internet for you at the address you have registered. It is good practice to use two different companies: one for your hosting and one for your domain registration. That way if you part company with your website hosting company, you will still have easy control of your domain name. It is just better not to have all of your eggs in one basket when it comes to your personal website.

Domain registration and hosting is a crucial part of developing a presence on the internet for yourself or your company. It is tempting to go with a free service so that you can get up and running as quickly and easily as possible, but the best thing you can do to properly market and draw traffic to your website is to take the time to make your domain registration and hosting a priority so that you get the domain you want and a hosting service that will best fit your needs.

As your domain name is the name and address by which you're known online, it's the basis of your online identity. So it's important to create the right domain name for your business. First we'll look at how to choose the right domain name for your business from various companies who offer domain name registration in the uk.

Your domain name must be unique. Registration Of All Generic Domains And Almost All Country Code Domains . Other than that, you have a lot of leeway in your choice. When you go onto any domain registration website, it would prompt you with a choice of similar possible web domain registration options. It can be anything between 2 and 67 characters long. Only alphanumeric characters and hyphens are allowed. Hyphens are not allowed at the beginning or end. You can use upper or lowercase characters, but it's best to stick to lower case. If you were to choose longer domain names, sometimes you would be able to buy them from cheap domain registration companies, or if you were to buy a complete web hosting package, the domain registration company could offer you free domain registration.

Next you have to choose a top level domain (TLD) which is the extension at the end your domain name. Your options are .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .ws, and country-specific ones such as .uk. Most experts recommend going for .com or your country specific extension.

So what makes an effective domain name? Firstly it shouldn't be too long as you want your customers to remember it easily. There's less chance of someone making a mistake when typing it into a browser. If your company name is well known, you could incorporate that into your domain name. However, the trend nowadays is to base domain names on keywords relating to your product or service. This is a key component of search engine optimisation and search engine marketing.

After choosing your domain name you need to check if it is an available domain registration offered by any web hosting company. Many domain registration companies offer this service free of charge on their web sites, where you can get sometimes also find free domain registration. You simply enter your chosen name and it will search the domain registration databases and tell you if that name has been taken.

If so, you can tweak it and check the new version for availability. Cheap domain registration is available by companies that include their company name in the URL, at times; it is possible to get them free from free domain registration companies. Domain hosting registration is a simple process, this can be done within minutes on any domain registration website and you could be online within minutes. Domain name registration in the uk has just recently started to take off, so there would be a lot of companies offering cheap domain registration and also free domain registration as promotional offers. This generally involves filling out a simple form on their web site and entering payment details. Costs range from $8 per annum and up depending on the TLD. You can also register for longer periods such as five years.

Cuttlefish Use Ancient Ink Formula

60-Second Science60-Second Science | Evolution

The melanin in modern-day cuttlefish ink is nearly chemically identical to the pigment found in ancient cephalopods' fossilized ink sacs. Sophie Bushwick reports

Tens of millions of years ago, cephalopods were hiding from their enemies in clouds of ink. And it turns out that cuttlefish today produce ink that?s almost identical.

Researchers found fossils of two giant cephalopods that swam the seas more than 160 million years ago. Each one contained a preserved ink sac. Analysis of the sacs revealed that some melanin pigment?the stuff that makes the ink dark?had survived. Plus, the chemical makeup of the melanin was virtually the same as the pigment found in modern-day cuttlefish ink. The work is in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Keely Glass et al., "Direct chemical evidence for eumelanin pigment from the Jurassic period"]

It?s rare to find preserved soft tissue in the fossil record. In addition, biomolecules often break down, leaving none of the original organic compounds. Melanin, however, has a sturdy structure that resists this fate. And the methods these researchers used to isolate it from the fossils could help other paleontologists better identify preserved organic molecules and their functions.

The finding also demonstrates that when something works, evolution usually leaves it alone. Because if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.

Jim Parsons Reveals He Is Gay

The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons reveals that he is gay and in a long-term relationship in a recent interview with the New York Times.

The Times, interviewing Parsons about his Broadway career, mentioned that he is gay and in a 10-year relationship, but did not elaborate.

The news is not exactly a surprise: Parsons thanked his presumed partner, Todd Spiewak, at the 2010 Emmys when he won for lead actor.

Jim Parsons Pic

Mostly, the actor spoke about his role Elwood P. Dowd in Broadway's Harvey.

While best known for Sheldon's classic Big Bang Theory quotes, Parsons praised Dowd as a character desiring to "connect with other people."

Parsons, 39, continued, saying, "The jump-out-of-bed happiness I feel transcends any nerves about taking on a history-laden role."

Elwood P. Dowd was most famously played by Jimmy Stewart in the 1944 film version of the play. Jim will no doubt do it justice.

How Using MBTI Results Can Help Leaders Build Better Teams ...

myers briggs MBTI

Team members who seek to understand one another will likely improve their overall team effectiveness because their communication is better. And one tool that can help teams understand their members is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, also known as the MBTI, or simply the Myers Briggs.

The MBTI helps teams because it helps individuals see the differences in their innate personalities: how they perceive the world and how they prefer to act. And when used with teams, it helps team members to understand each other better.

As a business leader looking to place employees in roles that match their strengths and to improve teams within your company, the MBTI assessment can be useful. Here is an overview of its uses for team development:

  • Identifying strengths, resources and potential weaknesses within a team.
  • Improving communication throughout the team.
  • Helping leaders identify an action plan to improve team effectiveness.
  • Helps align teams and reduce background noise.
  • Resolving, preventing and managing conflict and stressors because of greater understanding and awareness of other people?s preferences.

Certain individuals may find it difficult to understand why other people don?t think or act the same way they do. For example, why do some people faced with a problem take their time and consider other options, while other people quickly analyze the problem, come up with a solution and then act?

It can be frustrating trying to understand the other people you work with, but knowing the MBTI results of yourself and others around you can make it clearer to everyone how people have different ways of approaching the world. Most business people take the assessment about five times during their careers, so many of your employees have already taken it, or they will at least have heard of it. Also, 89 of the Fortune 100 companies and 80 percent of the Fortune 500 companies use personality tests based on the MBTI and its spinoffs.

Before using the MBTI, here are 3 Facts to help you understand it:

    1. It is built upon the work of Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist who is credited with creating the idea of people having personalities in his 1921 book Psychological Types.
    2. Katherine Briggs and her daughter Isabel Myers Briggs developed it in the 1940s. They created it to make Jung?s theory of psychological types more relevant to people?s lives.
    3. Four preferences are combined into 16 personality types. The four preferences are:
      • E or I (Extraversion or Introversion)
      • S or N (Sensing or iNtuition)
      • T or F (Thinking or Feeling)
      • J or P (Judgment or Perception)

What the different personality preferences mean

Extroverts

They enjoy interacting with people and develop new ideas during discussion. They often don?t know what they are thinking until they say it.

Introverts

They need to think things through before speaking. They enjoy focusing on a project and need quiet for concentration. They develop ideas internally and learn by reading and reflecting.

Sensors

Theys use specifics, such as facts, dates and times. They focus on the immediate and provide a realistic, practical perspective.

Intuitives

They look at the big picture and follow their inspirations. And they like solving new, complex problems.

Thinkers

They set their emotions aside. They prefer to step back from a problem and analyse facts and information. They focus on tasks and seek mutual respect and fairness among colleagues.

Feelers

They judge situations on a personal level. They are often able to see both sides of a situation and want harmony and support.

Judges

They favor exactness and following plans and schedules. They reach decisions by deciding quickly.

Perceivers

They favor tolerance and open time frames. They like to be spontaneous and enjoy the process.

It?s important to point out that no psychological model predicts behavior. So, leaders shouldn?t use it to determine skill or ability. People can behave inconsistently with their preferences when they are motivated to, or when the situation requires it.

Affiliate Marketing Tips: How to Do Email Marketing for Best Results

Article Directory :: Internet Marketing/Online Business Articles

If you've not tried email marketing as part of your affiliate marketing efforts, then it's definitely something that should be considered. It's got a high response rate when it comes to making sales - but only if it's done in the right way. In this article I'm going to share with you some of the basic, and not so basic rules that will help you get the best for your business and your subscribers.

So let's start off by looking at the best practices.

Always include an unsubscribe link. Without this you could put yourself in hot water. The CAN-SPAM regulations state that all email marketing should contain a link that provide the option to unsubscribe from your promotional emails. Tools such as Aweber will automatically add an unsubscribe link to the bottom of each email. If you don't include an unsubscribe link then a reader may click on the Spam button in their email client and they won't be able to hear from you again. If you receive several of these, then it's possible that your emails will be redirected to the spam folder of everybody that you send to. Not a good outcome for affiliate marketing efforts!

Attain permission to email your subscribers. Without permission from your recipients, sending emails to them is spamming. Sending any promotional emails without permission is considered spamming and it can get you into trouble. Email marketing tools will help you to gain permission, and some of them will not allow you to contact people without this permission.

Include your contact information. Again, another CAN-SPAM regulation is to include your address and contact details on all your email marketing. After all your contacts may want to contact you via phone or through mail with questions or even to make a purchase, so help them out by adding this information to the footer of every email. Even when you are involved in affiliate marketing, making yourself credible brings bigger and better results.

Timing is everything. The time that you send your emails should be related to your target audience. If you are targeting businesses, then it may be an idea to send them emails for them to open first thing in the morning. If you are targeting consumers then after 5pm or at weekends could have an increased open rate for you. As with any aspect of marketing, it's wise to try different times, analyse your results and apply your findings to your future activity.

Branding needs to be consistent. Every touch point with clients needs to be in line with your brand identity. This means image, style and content. If you don't keep your branding consistent, then you could lose subscribers as they will become disengaged. They are looking to you to stay in line with what they are expecting from you. This doesn't apply just to small businesses, but to affiliate marketing professionals too.

Consider subject lines. Most subject lines should be written to reveal the content of the email, however there is another approach that you can take. You might want to try out the curiosity of your readers by writing an intriguing subject line. Alternatively, write something friendly that has some relation to the content of the email.

Email marketing can do wonders for your affiliate marketing sales if it's implemented in the right way.

THERAPIES4ALL BLOG: Are You Suffering From Back Pain?

If you are suffering from back pain, you are not alone. About nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year.

Back pain ranges from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain. It can come on suddenly such as that from an accident, a fall, or lifting something heavy; or it can develop slowly, as the result of age-related changes to the spine. Regardless of how back pain happens or how it feels, you know it when you have it. And if you don?t have back pain now, you will eventually have it.?

So, who is at risk for back pain? One of the risk factors is age. The first attack of low back pain typically occurs between the ages of 30 and 40. Back pain becomes more common with age.

The other factor is fitness. Back pain is more common among people who are not physically fit. Weak back and abdominal muscles may not properly support the spine. People who go out and exercise a lot after being inactive all week are more likely to suffer painful back injuries than people who make moderate physical activity a daily habit. Studies show that low-impact aerobic exercise is good for the disks that cushion the vertebrae, the individual bones that make up the spine.

Another factor is diet. A diet high in calories and fat, combined with an inactive lifestyle, can lead to obesity, which can put stress on the back. Back pain also depends on heredity. Some causes of back pain, such as ankylosing spondylitis, a form of arthritis that affects the spine, have a genetic component.

Back pain is also dependent on race. Race can be a factor in back problems. African American women, for example, are two to three times more likely than white women to develop spondylolisthesis, a condition in which a vertebra of the lower spine?also called the lumbar spine?slips out of place.

Back pain may also be present with other diseases. Many diseases can cause or contribute to back pain. These include various forms of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and cancers elsewhere in the body that may spread to the spine.?

Having a job that requires heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling, particularly when this involves twisting or vibrating the spine, can lead to injury and back pain. An inactive job or a desk job may also lead to or contribute to pain, especially if you have poor posture or sit all day in an uncomfortable chair.

Although smoking may not directly cause back pain, it increases your risk of developing low back pain and low back pain with sciatica. (Sciatica is back pain that radiates to the hip and/or leg due to pressure on a nerve.) For example, smoking may lead to pain by blocking your body?s ability to deliver nutrients to the disks of the lower back. Or repeated coughing due to heavy smoking may cause back pain. It is also possible that smokers are just less physically fit or less healthy than nonsmokers, which increases the likelihood that they will develop back pain. Smoking also increases the risk of osteoporosis, a condition that causes weak, porous bones, which can lead to painful fractures of the vertebrae. Furthermore, smoking can slow healing, prolonging pain for people who have had back injuries, back surgery, or broken bones.

So what causes back pain??

Perhaps the most common mechanical cause of back pain is a condition called intervertebral disk degeneration, which simply means that the disks located between the vertebrae of the spine are breaking down with age. As they deteriorate, they lose their cushioning ability. This problem can lead to pain if the back is stressed. Other mechanical causes of back pain include spasms, muscle tension, and ruptured disks, which are also called herniated disks.

Spine injuries such as sprains and fractures can cause either short-lived or chronic pain. Sprains are tears in the ligaments that support the spine, and they can occur from twisting or lifting improperly. Fractured vertebrae are often the result of osteoporosis. Less commonly, back pain may be caused by more severe injuries that result from accidents or falls.

Many medical problems can cause or contribute to back pain. They include scoliosis, a curvature of the spine that does not usually cause pain until middle age; spondylolisthesis; various forms of arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis; and spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal column that puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Although osteoporosis itself is not painful, it can lead to painful fractures of the vertebrae. Other causes of back pain include pregnancy; kidney stones or infections; endometriosis, which is the buildup of uterine tissue in places outside the uterus; and fibromyalgia, a condition of widespread muscle pain and fatigue.

Although they are not common causes of back pain, infections can cause pain when they involve the vertebrae, a condition called osteomyelitis, or when they involve the disks that cushion the vertebrae, which is called diskitis. Tumors also are relatively rare causes of back pain. Occasionally, tumors begin in the back, but more often they appear in the back as a result of cancer that has spread from elsewhere in the body.

Although the causes of back pain are usually physical, emotional stress can play a role in how severe pain is and how long it lasts. Stress can affect the body in many ways, including causing back muscles to become tense and painful.

One of the best things you can do to prevent back pain is to exercise regularly and keep your back muscles strong. Exercises that increase balance and strength can decrease your risk of falling and injuring your back or breaking bones. Exercises such as tai chi and yoga?or any weight-bearing exercise that challenges your balance?are good ones to try.

Eating a healthy diet also is important. For one thing, eating to maintain a healthy weight?or to lose weight, if you are overweight?helps you avoid putting unnecessary and injury-causing stress and strain on your back. To keep your spine strong, as with all bones, you need to get enough calcium and vitamin D every day. These nutrients help prevent osteoporosis, which is responsible for a lot of the bone fractures that lead to back pain. Calcium is found in dairy products; green, leafy vegetables; and fortified products, like orange juice. Your skin makes vitamin D when you are in the sun. If you are not outside much, you can obtain vitamin D from your diet: nearly all milk and some other foods are fortified with this nutrient. Most adults don?t get enough calcium and vitamin D, so talk to your doctor about how much you need per day, and consider taking a nutritional supplement or a multivitamin.

Practicing good posture, supporting your back properly, and avoiding heavy lifting when you can may all help you prevent injury. If you do lift something heavy, keep your back straight. Don?t bend over the item; instead, lift it by putting the stress on your legs and hips.

You should see a doctor if you have numbness or tingling, if your pain is severe and doesn?t improve with medication and rest, or if you have pain after a fall or an injury. It is also important to see your doctor if you have pain along with any of the following problems: trouble urinating; weakness, pain, or numbness in your legs; fever; or unintentional weight loss. Such symptoms could signal a serious problem that requires treatment soon.

California group opposes Harvey Milk Day

By Jean Elle, KNTV

Conservative group Save California is urging parents to keep their children home from school on May 22, "Harvey Milk Day," a holiday honoring the gay rights pioneer. KNTV's Jean Elle reports.

?

A group called Save California is urging parents to keep their children out of school on May 22, which California lawmakers declared Harvey Milk Day in 2009.

Harvey Milk, whose birthday was May 22, was a San Francisco supervisor who was fatally shot in 1978. Schools are encouraged to teach students about the openly gay lawmaker and his fight for civil rights.

Save California has produced radio advertisements, warning parents it?s a dangerous lesson plan. One advertisement declares: "Parents, your boys and girls are being targeted for immoral indoctrination at school on Harvey Milk Day."

Glendon Hyde, of the Harvey Milk Democratic Club, says the ads are "pure, fear-based manipulation."
